If a workshop is full, please submit a Waitlist Application HERE. This application can also be found at Penland.org , click on Registration, then scroll down to Waiting List . Students interested in a scholarship to attend our programming should not apply to be on the waiting list. Those applications can be found online at: www.penland.slideroom.com.

Housing assignments are made on a first, come-first, served basis. We cannot honor requests for specific rooms or buildings. We do our best to match students with the type of housing they request, but this is not always possible. If the housing preference selected is not available, we will contact you to discuss alternate options. Note: we only house people enrolled in workshop.

Session Three: June 16-28

Jim Stone
View Camera Workshop

The view camera may seem daunting, but it is easily mastered. Its contemplative, methodical approach rewards users with photographs of the highest quality. We will learn to use the large-format camera, control focus and perspective, develop sheet film using a simplified zone system, make enlargements in a darkroom, and scan negatives for digital printing. Alternative and historic printing methods will be discussed but not practiced. It will be helpful if students are familiar with the rudiments of traditional black-and-white photography — exposure, film development, and darkroom printing — but this workshop is
open to all levels.
